Workshops and Presentations Woman Vision's films Straight from the Heart, All God's Children, De Colores, and Out for a Change are paired in workshop formats with a trained facilitator who leads group discussions about the films and homophobia. Woman Vision has a history of working with African American faith based organizations using the video All God's Children in those settings. Work with high school students and athletic teams include showing Out for a Change. Other venues are shown Straight from the Heart (Please look at Our Films page for more information about these films). After the video, the facilitated discussion is based on interactive dialogue that helps participants look at stereotypes and beliefs about homosexuals. The facilitator asks individuals to discuss the stereotypes they have heard about lesbians and gay men and consider whether these stereotypes are true for all or most homosexuals. Using the individuals in the video as well as urging the participants to consider gays and lesbians they know helps to dispel the myths homophobia is based on. Interviews and feedback following the presentations have demonstrated the impact of our work. Many participants leave feeling better about themselves, find that they now have more accurate information and confirm both an attitude as well as an overall opinion change toward the homosexual community.
Over 2,000 copies of our videos have been donated to organizations and conferences committed to social justice and equal rights, including the American Friends Service Committee of Ann Arbor; a consortium of civil rights and gay/lesbian groups in Utah; AID Atlanta; religious, social justice, and health-related organizations in North Carolina; Bay Area and National Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN); a human rights group in Dade County Florida; Bay Area Network of Gay and Lesbian Educators (BANGLE); Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG); and the National Black Religious Summit on Sexuality. Our videos and discussion materials are being used in curriculum-based instruction in colleges, universities and high schools; in counseling programs, including HIV/AIDS prevention work; in foster-parent education programs; and in churches and faith communities nationwide.
