SPONSORSHIPS HONORED HISTORICAL PERSONALITIES
Del and Phyllis chose to honor eight historical personalities who have inspired their lives by listing event donors at named sponsorship levels. Here are brief biographies of these inspirational pioneers who are no longer with us.
PAT PARKER, African-American poet and activist, said, "I believe that a writer should be a mirror not only of her/his personal life but also of the times; therefore any subject from washing dishes to the president can be written about." She wrote in the language and everyday experience of street dykes and working class women of all races.
RIKKI STREICHER. "Last Call at Maud's" is a documentary film of Rikki's bar in the Haight-Ashbury and her perception of her Lesbian clientele as "family." She provided a safe and homey atmosphere with a variety of recreational choices (pool, cards, reading, etc.) and a sense of belonging.
GEORGE MENDENHALL, blue collar worker and journalist, featured in the "Word Is Out" documentary, was editor of Vector published by the Society for Individual Rights (SIR). He joined NOW to support his Lesbian sisters and the Equal Rights Amendment.
BARBARA CAMERON, photographer, writer, activist and founder of Gay American Indians in 1975. In her quiet, focused and determined way she became an international leader sharing her talents for communicating and political organizing.
DORRWIN BUCK JONES, a Gay gerontologist and founder of numerous service agencies for the aged and dying. Amazingly, in San Francisco's political and activist milieu, where backbiting is a favorite sport, nary a derogatory word was said of Dorr Jones. Terminally ill himself, he greeted everyone with a never-failing optimism, a big smile, laughter and camaraderie.
PAT BOND, stand-up comic, playwright, and actress, who staged one-woman shows. She said of herself, "I'm not a monologist, I'm an oral historian." Her powerful play, "Lorena Hickok and Eleanor Roosevelt: A Love Story" was based on actual letters. Eleanor had been Pat's idol. Playing the role of Hick, Pat said, "It was wonderful to get to be in love with her on the stage."
SHEVY HEALEY, psychologist who came out at age 50. Helped found Old Lesbians Organizing for Change (OLOC) to combat ageism and inspire visibility and empowering of old Lesbians. She was instrumental in convincing LGBT national organizations that aging issues apply to our communities.
JO DALY, first Lesbian or Gay appointed to the San Francisco Police Commission and first to staff the Human Rights Commission's Gay Advisory Board. She was an ardent and tireless leader of the national movement to legalize medical marijuana up to her death from cancer.
